SNOWBIRD, Utah (August 9, 2014) – BMC Racing Team’s Cadel Evans (AUS) survived a long day in the breakaway and outsprinted challengers to snare victory on Saturday at the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah. The 2011 Tour de France champion broke free from a four-rider breakaway over the final kilometer to win Stage 6 presented by University of Utah Health Care in a time of 4 hours, 34 minutes and 31 seconds.
Evans was part of an early 15-rider lead group which was whittled down to just four riders as they hit the bottom of Little Cottonwood Canyon, the last of four categorized climbs on the 107.2-mile stage. American Joey Rosskopf of Hincapie Sportswear Development finished second, followed by Austrian national road race champion Riccardo Zoidl of Trek Factory Racing in third.
Despite Evans’ assault in the Wasatch Mountains, the leaders in the overall standings remained unchanged with one day remaining. Garmin-Sharp’s Tom Danielson (USA) retained his Larry H. Miller Dealerships leader’s jersey and his 57-second advantage over Lampre-Merida’s Chris Horner (USA). Ben Hermans (BEL) of BMC Racing Team remains in third on the General Classification, but lost time to fall 1:26 behind Danielson.
“My main goal was to come here and race hard. At the end of the day, I think we had a pretty good result out there. It was a premeditated plan today. It was a plan that was easy to make, but harder to execute. It was still not enough for me to make significant moves on the G.C., but it was enough to go for the stage win,” said Evans, a former world champion who is making his first appearance at the Tour of Utah this year. “We really like racing here (in Utah). It’s in some ways more enjoyable for us to race here than some of the other bigger races because of the ambiance and so on. I think we’ll certainly try to be part of the race again tomorrow.”
With his Stage 6 win, Evans moves from ninth to sixth in the G.C., 2:29 back. The G.C. saw American Matthew Busche of Trek Factory Racing move into the Top 10, 4:10 off the pace. Park City’s Tanner Putt, the U.S. U23 national champion, is now 35th overall, two-time Giro d’Italia champion Ivan Basso (ITA) of Team Cannondale is in 39th position, and German Jens Voigt of Trek Factory sits in 42nd position overall.
The Tour of Utah’s “Queen Stage” lived up to its reputation as one of cycling’s most demanding days in the saddle, with 12,643 feet of climbing and four Ski Utah King of the Mountain climbs. Rosskopf not only finished second on the stage, he pedaled himself back into the Ski Utah King of the Mountain Jersey by crossing each of the four KOM points in first or second position.
“I was all in (for a stage win). I didn’t really have the confidence, maybe, to give it 100 percent until two kilometers to go. I glanced back and I could see the next group coming up. We’d been out there all day, so might as well sprint and get third or fourth than get caught by however many were behind us,” stated Rosskopf, who won the Redlands Bicycle Classic in April. He was referring to a small group of riders who attacked on the Snowbird climb which included Wilco Kelderman (NED) of Belkin-Pro Racing (fourth on the stage and fifth on G.C.), Chris Horner (USA) of Trek Factory Racing (fifth on the stage and second on G.C.) and Tom Danielson (USA) of Team Garmin-Sharp (sixth on the stage and G.C. leader).
Utah’s Robbie Squire (Jamis) is having a strong Tour of Utah. His 23rd place finish on Saturday moved Squire up to 20th overall, just 8:57 back.
Tanner Putt is riding well, too. The Park City product is 35th overall while little brother and Bissell Development teammate Chris is 64th.
Of 122 riders who started the 2014 Tour of Utah, only 99 remain.
For a fourth time, the Tour of Utah returns to Park City for the grand finale. Last year the decisive move for the Larry H. Miller Dealerships overall leader’s jersey was made on the final KOM over Empire Pass into downtown Park City. This 78-mile stage, first introduced in 2013, rolls out of Park City at 12:20 p.m. and through Kamas and Heber. The final climb up Empire Pass has become legendary for its average gradient of 10 percent, and sections that exceed 20 percent. Huge crowds are again expected on lower Main Street in Park City for the overall finish of the 2014 Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah.
