Salt Lake City - Nissan announced recently the sponsorship of Team NISSAN, a women’s bicycle racing team in Salt Lake City.
Nissan's intrigue with the Salt Lake-based team is the uniqueness of an all-woman team and their seriousness and commitment to the sport of cycling. Nissan's timing of the sponsorship will be used to introduce the new Nissan model XTERRA this summer.
The 7-member team will race in local, regional and national events and are hopefuls for the International Women's Challenge in Idaho this June, a grueling week-long event that attracts pro women cyclists from aound the world. The sponsors and team will host The Nissan XTERRA Criterium July 17 in Salt Lake City.
Team members are Angela Snyder, Jill Smith, Daphne Wilhelm, Heather Albert, Alison Bergerson, Michele Weidner and Lisa Peck Moynahan. These racers are United States Cycling Federation licensed Category 3 to Pro 1.
The team is scheduled to compete in 30 races this season starting in Phoenix, AZ at the "Valley of the Sun" race Feb. 18. This race, as well as training in St. George, will help prepare the team for its first national race, "Another Dam Race," Feb. 28th in Parker, AZ. (See Racing Briefs elsewhere in this issue.)
