A1. If you were a fan of the sport in the 1980’s then this was a “gimme!” Sean Kelly of Ireland dominated the event from 1982-1988 while riding for Jean de Gribaldy’s Sem/Skil/Kas formation. That is seven wins in a row! He arguably could have won more but in 1989 switched to the PDM squad which raced Tirreno instead.
A2. Two Americans have won it! The first was Bobby Julich in 2005, followed by Floyd Landis in 2006. Prior to these two victories (albeit during a controversial era), the best results were 2nd by Lance Armstrong in 1996 and 3rd by Greg Lemond in 1986.
A3. Egan Bernal, a Colombian with Team Sky (now Ineos) did this double in 2019. It is fairly common occurrence to win both, and he was preceded in this feat by his teammate Bradley Wiggins in 2012 among many others.
A4. Belgian legend Roger DeVlaeminck won six editions, concurrently from 1972-77. DeVlaeminck is one of only three riders (all Belgian) who have won all of cycling monuments in their career.
A5. 2nd by Chris Horner of Bend, Oregon back in 2012. He eclipsed Greg Lemond’s 3rd place back in 1982.
BONUS: Swiss Fabian Cancellara, back in 2008. For the last Italian you have to go all way back to 1994 and Giorgio Furlan.
