SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (August 9, 2023) — The Annual 5 Canyons Challenge is returning to Utah on August 19, 2023. The ride will traverse four canyons this year in the Salt Lake Valley, while at the same time contributing to Wheels of Justice https://hooleking.com/practice-areas/wheels-of-justice/ a non-profit that raises funds to fight against child abuse.  The event is in August to train for the some of the tougher late season races like LOTOJA, held later in the year.  The participants will start up Little Cottonwood, climb to the top, take in the gorgeous views of Snowbird and Alta, and then descend 4,000 ft to the base.  The riders then climb to the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon to Brighton Resort and gain an additional 5,000’.

For years, the Barbacoa Mexican Grill has been a sponsor of the Mi Duole Cycling Team. This year, after completing the first two canyons and the cruise along Wasatch Blvd, cyclists can stop at the support tent in front of the Barbacoa restaurant in the Olympus Hills Shopping Center for a Buy One Get One Burrito.  The tent will be setup in the west end of the parking lot.  In this same parking lot is also the mechanical support for the event by Hangar15 Bicycles.

The US Forest Service is no longer allowing the event to travel up Mill Creek Canyon, due to impending construction, and while that’s a bummer, there’s still so much more.  As you head over to Emigration Canyon, there will be a base station setup there. This is also the finish of the event after climbing Emigration Canyon and Big Mountain and descending back for what may be the last year on this course

The Mi Duole Cycling Team is the host of this event and Utah’s longest standing cycling team.  Established in 1984, the team has been racing and riding throughout Salt Lake City, Utah and today is one of the most competitive teams in the state.  The Mi Duole Team has always had a love for climbing and always starts each morning traveling east in the valley, or up the canyons.
