cycling utah October 1998
Utah Master road racer Dirk Cowley travelled to Vienna, Austria for the World Masters Stage Race and UCI World Championships.
Cowley, who finished 3rd in GC at the stage race last year, earned a hard-fought win in the stage race in 1998. His consistent finishes helped him earn the World Championship striped jersey.
Starting in Deutchlandsberg, outside of Vienna, Cowley placed third in the first stage. He placed first in the sprint competitions recording the fastest time. He was second in the longest stage, a 100 km circuit race, which vaulted him into first place in GC. He was second in the hill climb, a stage that determined who would stand on the podium. Finally, he placed third in the time trial with a time that enabled him to retain his top placing on the podium.
After a drive to St. Johann in Tirol for the UCI World Championships, the race was held in difficult, cold weather. Cowley finished 27th in a 65-man field sprint.
