July 27, 2013 – Butte, MT – Lingering clouds kept the heat away long enough to allow another record setting year at the Butte 100 mountain bike race, held on July 27, 2013, in Butte, Montana. Tinker Juarez (Whittier, CA) continued his blazing fast 2013 race season winning the men’s overall with a time of 8:03:51 and becoming the three-time reigning champion. On the women’s side, Lisa Curry (GAS/Intrinsik) defended her 2012 crown with the winning time of 10:43:47. Both racers broke their own course records set in 2011.
Juarez, a recent Marathon National Champion, had to fend off Matt Butterfield (Kalispell, MT), Ben Parsons (Kalispell, MT), and John Curry (Bozeman, MT) early in the race, before pulling away to finish 17 minutes ahead of the previous course record. “I got here on Friday and I had to get up early,” Juarez said. “I kind of felt it a little bit, but then I got a second wind. The cloud cover was nice. That made it a lot more comfortable to ride today.”
Curry, beating her own course record by seven minutes, credited the clear air and cooler-than-anticipated conditions. “The conditions were perfect and the temperature was really tolerable. The course rode great. It has to be one of the best races in the country. The course is really challenging, but fun. I can’t imagine it being any better, honestly.”
On the 50 mile side, the first three men’s positions were filled within 19 minutes of each other, one of the closest podiums in race history. Justin Doll (Salt Lake City, UT) took the men’s overall win with a time of 4:55:10, while Ivy Pederson ((Bozeman, MT) brought home the women’s gold in 6:28:34.
