New segment includes paved bike trail, horse path and elevated walkway through wetlands
SALT LAKE CITY – Salt Lake City celebrated the completion of a milestone section of the Jordan River Parkway Trail–connecting Salt Lake County to Davis County onJune 7 on the trail near 1800 N. Redwood Road.
Mayor Becker said completion of the connecting segment is a landmark in this decades-long project.
“This is definitely a moment for celebration and a testament to the countless individuals, advocacy groups and government agencies that have been working together for decades to build this incredible regional resource,” said Mayor Becker. “Having 35 miles of protected, unbroken bicycle and pedestrian trail access, that is both a recreational scenic splendor and practical commuter option is a fabulous accomplishment.”
The new section of Jordan River Parkway trail extends one mile from Redwood Road at approximately 1800 North, to the Davis County line and includes a 10-foot wide asphalt trail, 5-foot wide horse trail and 1,000 feet of elevated boardwalk through a wetlands area. In addition, a trailhead parking area was constructed at approximately 1800 North Redwood Road. The project was financed with City funds and grants from the Utah State Recreational Trails and Land and Water Conservation Fund programs.
Trail users can now travel from Salt Lake City to Davis County and other northern Wasatch Front communities through the interconnection of the Jordan River Parkway Trail, the Legacy Parkway Trail and the Denver & Rio Grande Western Rail. The total continuous off-street trail system from North Temple in Salt Lake City to Roy City in Weber County is now approximately 35 miles.
There is only one section of the Jordan River Trail in Salt Lake City remaining to be completed: the 0.5 mile section between 200 South and North Temple. The City is currently working to determine how to complete this difficult section of trail that needs to cross three Union Pacific rail lines and one local rail line. Looking at the overall Jordan River Trail, only four small sections remain to be constructed. The trail gaps are located in Salt Lake City (1), West Jordan (1), and Bluffdale (2).
