May 15, 2014 – Salt Lake City – The Cycle Salt Lake Century Ride, scheduled for Saturday, May 17, 2014 and a mainstay ride in the Utah cycling community for 28 years, has been cancelled for 2014. In communication with organizer Jon Smith, he cited health issues as the main factor. He also stated that the Cycle Salt Lake Century will return in 2015.
The Cycle Salt Lake Century sent this statement,
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce that the 2014 Cycle Salt Lake Century scheduled for May 17th, 2014 has been cancelled. Be assured there were many factors that went into this decision…a decision that was not made easily.
I have been associated with this ride for over 20 years. Each year, the ride has improved and we saw the number of riders increase. This year, that did not happen. Other factors exist but the incredibly low number of registered riders is extremely significant.
Your registration fees will be returned. Jerseys which were ordered and paid for will be distributed.
Please accept my sincere apology for the disappointment and the inconvenience this has caused each of you. I value you as riders as well as friends.
I want to thank everyone who has made these rides possible and so successful for all these years: the volunteers, sponsors, city officials, and, of course, the riders whose participation has made all the hard work worth it.
