Saturday, June 5 is the grand official opening of the Steiner Centennial section of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. This is the part of the trail that runs from Emmigration Canyon all the way to City Creek and soon to the Davis County line below Ensign Peak.
The ceremony will take place at 11:00 am on Morris Meadows. The nearest trailhead is on Northmount Avenue, at the top of the Avenues, but the bike ride from the trailheads at Terrace Hills or City Creek is short and easy.
After the opening ceremonies, there will be guided tours of the trail and a chance to meet other trail users, local politicians, and the folks who have organized the trail construction.

June 5 is also National Trails Day and was planned as the opening day for the Parley's Crossing project at the mouth of Parley's Canyon. Because of all the wet weather this spring, however, the trail could not be completed in time. So far, there has been no new opening date set.
Thanks to support from cyclists and trail enthusiasts of all persuasions, House Bill 108 passed the legislature this year and will provide $200,000 for projects along the seven Wasatch Front counties that share some part of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. The first round of applications, which closed on May 1, includes projects from most of the counties and there will be another round of funding in October to award the second half of the money.
One of cycling's unique events is scheduled in our back yard. The sixth annual Antelope by Moonlight bike ride is set for Friday, June 25.
Ride under the full moon on this 20-mile ride along the shore of the Great Salt Lake and on to Antelope Island. Headlights will be available for purchase at the start. Helmets are required.
Registration begins at 8:30 p.m. at the park entrance. The ride is from 10 pm to 1 am. Pre-registration is $16 age 14 to adult and $13 under 14 and is due by June 14. Late registration is $22 age 14 to adult and $17 under 14. T-shirt and refreshments are included in registration fees.

The Salt Lake City Council is proposing $46,700 in cuts from the Transportation Department. The money has been used in the past to help fund such projects as the Sunnyside Bike Route and Parley's Crossing.
Council staff maintains that the money hasn't been spent on bicycle projects and is trying to find ways to meet a $4.1 million dollar budget shortfall.
Cutting the funding will likely result in long delays for federally funded projects that require matching funds. Bike lane striping, signs, maintenance and planning efforts are unlikely to be affected.
The Larry H. Miller Subaru Cycle Salt Lake Century held May 22 from the State Fairgrounds to Antelope Island and back had 750 participants. The event raised aprroximately $1400 for the trails on Antelope Island and approximately $7000 for the Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Committee (MBAC), an independent citizen's group. The money will go towards bicycling related projects in the Salt Lake area.
