In early December the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) appointed Jon Gallagher as the Utah state representative. IMBA, based in
Boulder, Colorado, is a worldwide non-profit, public supported organization that promotes mountain bicycling opportunities that are environmentally sound and socially responsible.
In addition to competing on the road at the Pro, 1-2 level for the past 8 years including living and racing in Europe for 4 seasons, Jon is co-owner of Sacred Bear Adventures, a road and mountain bike touring company based in Park City. IMBA just recently completed its state rep leadership summit in Austin, Texas, at which Jon was able to attend.
"I'm relatively new to mountain biking and to Utah, so I'm very much looking forward to working for IMBA," Jon said. "Essentially my role is to collect information and work with various groups, from bicycle clubs to land managers to state and local governments, to help solve access problems, to design, build and maintain trails and to educate the public. The heart of IMBA's philosophy is shared trails among multiple users, and we certainly have several user groups in Utah. Every state is unique in what issues are most important, and I'm very interested to learn what issues are out there and what opinions people have. Communication is the key to understanding and I'd love to hear what people have to say about the state of mountain biking and trail use in Utah."
IMBA is planning a trail care clinic for late may that Jon will help coordinate. Check future issues of cycling utah for updates and information and plan on attending.

At Valley of the Sun
Dave Zabriskie (7 UP/ Colorado Cyclist) placed second in the opening time trial and third overall in the Valley of the Sun Stage Race in Phoenix, AZ, Feb. 18-20.

With the 2000 National Racing Calendar Series getting underway, all of the nation's top Men's and Women's teams were in Merced, CA Feb. 17-20 for the McLane Pacific Classic.
In the women's road race an early attack came from Anke Erlank (Autotrader.com). A chase group of nine riders that included Saturn's Dede Demet-Barry and Lyne Bessete caught up to Erlank after chasing hard for much of the race. The final sprint was decided as Heather Albert beat out Erlank at the finish.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Cycling has selected nine cyclists to join the 2000 U.S. Olympic Training Center resident-athlete program, USA Cycling Director of Athlete Performance Sean Petty announced Monday.
Buccambuso won the U.S. Cycling Federation (USCF) junior national road race championship in 1999, followed by a victory at the Tour L'Abitibi in Canada. He also competed at the 1999 Junior World Road Cycling Championships in Verona, Italy.
The goals of the resident program include identifying, supporting and coaching top young athletes and building the best athlete training programs and structures oriented to the Olympic Games. Among some of the alumni of the USA Cycling resident-athlete program are Bobby Julich, Mari Holden, Christian Vande Velde, Erin Veenstra-Mirabella and Mariano Friedick.
Rich Olken, Executive Director of Bikes Belong Coalition, announced today that the bicycle, a simple mechanical marvel, has been named the Invention of the Millennium.
"Nothing else even comes close," Olken noted, "it changed industry and society. The bicycle is even responsible for the emancipation, enfranchisement and equality of half our population, and now we realize that it is a major component in the solutions to our problems with gridlock, pollution, obesity and other societal ills."
