BOISE, IDAHO - More than 12,000 people cheered the nation's top racers across the finish line in Downtown Boise, Saturday evening, July 31, in one of Boise's major summer attractions - the 13th Annual First Security Twilight Criterium presented by PowerBar. With a $10,000 cash purse for the Main Event, some of the nation's top riders and teams comprised this field of 43 cyclists.
Winner John Lieswyn (Shaklee team) of Ventura, California and second place finisher, Steve Hegg (Lexus team) of Carlsbad, California broke away from the pack early on and lapped the pack with two laps to go finishing the 55-lap criterium in 59:39. Finishing third was Eric Wohlberg (Shaklee team) of Levack, Ontario. Wohlberg won a gold medal last weekend in the Pan Am Games in Winnipeg, Canada and Hegg won a gold in the 1984 Olympics.
"This was a great event with a great crowd" said Lieswyn. "I can't wait to come back next year."
VeloNews, a national cycling magazine, recently named the First Security Twilight Criterium one of the top three criteriums in the U.S.
Cash prizes were awarded to the top 20 finishers of the Main Event, including prizes to the top racers during "preem laps" dispersed throughout the race. Also racing were the amateur racers in two pre-twilight races. Winning the Cat 3 race was Billy Allen (Rhodes team) and Michael Hones (Lake Washington Velo team) won the Cat. 4-5 race.
First Security and George's Cycles and Fitness are the creators of the Twilight Criterium. Other major sponsors include PowerBar and Clear Channel Broadcasting and its radio station Mix106.
