Ride your 'ol faithful' to Yellowstone's Old Faithful

The West Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce is once again sponsoring the "Yellow-stone/Old Faithful Fall Cycling Tour '99" October 2. So swing your leg over your faithful mechanical steed for some old-fashioned sight seeing at the crown jewel of the national park system.

The bicycle route passes by five geyser basins where footpaths lead to intriguing geysers and a 2. 5 mile bike path near Old Faithful. A guided ranger tour will be available on bike or footpaths around the Old Faithful area. These geyser basins are ideal to explore on bike or hiking trails that lead to places that only the "fleet of foot" are normally able to access.

Yellowstone National Park in the fall has fewer automobiles, fall colors, crisp morning and evening air and lets one see the breath of the bull elk as they bugle while they challenge other bull elk for their harems. Other animals are plentiful as they migrate from the mountains to the valleys in preparation for the upcoming winter.

Mountain bike rides are available on the National Forest bike trails outside Yellowstone Park.

The tour will feature optional shuttle service for participants and their bikes to or from the Old Faithful area (30 miles one way). Or forgo the shuttle and complete the 60-mile round trip.

Registration for the event is $25 and includes shuttles, dinner, snacks for your fanny pack and door prizes. Additional activities include a Participant's Photo Contest with prizes (1-hour photo available). Bike festival T-shirts are optional. Park fee is $10 and Golden Eagle and Golden Age passes are honored. Family rates (those living in the same household) are $20.

Participants can take advantage of end of season lodging rates offered by sponsors of the event. Riding opportunities after the event are plentiful, both on and off road. So make a weekend of it.

Also mark your calendar for the "Yellowstone Spring Cycle Tour 2000" scheduled for May 13, 2000. This is a 60-mile loop ride passing three lakes in Idaho and Montana.
